PROTECTION: Using a resettable low-voltage breaker while testing can save fuses and still protect the equipment. TESTING CIRCUITS: Test the circuits for a short by touching to R one at a time with C still connected normally. TRIPPED BREAKER: While locating a short, the Supco FusePro tripped, protecting the circuit during testing. CONTACTOR OVERLOAD: An over amperage condition can occur when a magnetic coil is energized but the moving action of the device is impeded. LOW-VOLTAGE SHORT: A short can occur between any energized circuit and ground or common, resulting in a blown low-voltage fuse or breaker. I see techs in the field get the most frustrated when they have a low-voltage short they can’t seem to locate. Google’s Curie undersea cable now connects the US and Chile

Curie, a 10,500-kilometer-long undersea cable, now connects Google data centers in the US and Chile. Today, Google announced that the fiber optic cable has been successfully installed and tested. It is expected to begin transmitting data in the second quarter of 2020, and Google is already working on a branch into Panama. Curie (named after scientist Marie Curie) contains four 18 terabit per second (Tbps) fiber-optic pairs, which allow it to deliver 72 Tbps of bandwidth. As Google points out, 98 percent of its traffic travels through fiber optic cables, and in areas like Chile, Google cannot grow using existing cables, which are nearing end-of-life and don’t have enough capacity. Submarine cable systems like Curie offer an alternative. The fiber-optic cables are about the size of a garden hose, but they’re encased in layers of steel wire, copper and a protective coating. Every 100 km there’s an amplifier, or repeater, to boost the fiber-optic signal, which would fade otherwise, and Google says the cables have no adverse environmental impact. Desalination plants turn seawater into drinking water, but also pump hypersaline water back into the environment. That’s especially troubling because desal has become extremely popular. If only humans could drink seawater without dying, we wouldn’t find ourselves floundering in a water crisis. To not die, first you have to boil saltwater and collect the pure vapor, or get yourself a fancy membrane that filters out all the salt and, conveniently, sea life. This is the controversial idea behind large-scale desalination—great big expensive facilities that turn saltwater into a liquid that won’t kill you. The classic criticism of desal is that it takes a tremendous amount of energy to process seawater, and we really shouldn’t be burning any more fossil fuels than we need to be. But a less chattered-about problem is the effect on the local environment: The primary byproduct of desal is brine, which facilities pump back out to sea.
